WJGR Ranking Methodology

Version 0.2 — March 2026

Overview

The WJGR produces a single composite score for each player based on their strokeplay tournament performances over a rolling 52-week window. The ranking rewards consistent low scoring, competition against strong fields, and high finishes in quality events.

Players need a minimum of 3 qualifying events (with at least 4 rounds) to achieve Qualified status. Those with fewer events are ranked as Provisional.

The WJGR Score

Each player's score is a weighted combination of three components:

Scoring Differential — the primary factor. Measures how well a player scores relative to the difficulty of the courses they play. Lower differentials indicate better performance. A statistical trimming method is applied to reward consistency and reduce the impact of outlier rounds.

Field Strength — rewards players who compete against stronger fields. The strength of each event division is assessed based on the existing ranking quality of its participants.

Finish Quality — rewards strong finishes within a field. Top finishes in larger, longer events carry more weight than identical finishes in smaller or shorter competitions.

Rolling Window

Only events within the most recent 52 weeks are counted. As new events are added, older events gradually fall outside the window and cease to contribute to a player's score.

This ensures rankings reflect current form rather than historical performance.

Qualification

Players with 3 or more events and a minimum of 4 rounds in the current window are marked as Qualified.

Players with fewer events are ranked as Provisional — their score is calculated using the same methodology but is based on a smaller sample of performances.

Publication Schedule

Rankings are published weekly on Thursdays.

Tournament results can be submitted at any time. New results are incorporated into the next weekly publication cycle.
